The Rights Respecting School Award recognises schools that put the Convention on the Rights of the child at the centre of their school ethos and planning.


Gossey Lane is proud to announce that, after achieving UNICEF’s Bronze Award back in February 2018 for our commitment to becoming a rights respecting school, we continued our drive towards the more prestigious ‘Silver Award’ and, after a school assessment by UNICEF, we were awarded the Silver Award in July 2018.  We now have the ‘Gold Award’ in our sights!

We have put together a steering group, “The Gossey Rights Respecting Crew” which meet often and is made up of children, senior leaders, middle leaders and class teachers. All school stakeholders ensure values are reflected in our school vision and are central to our ethos and values.


The Conventions on the Rights of the Child consists of 54 Articles. A ‘child’ is defined as every human being below the age of 18. The key provisions are :

  1. The right to childhood
  2. The right to be educated
  3. The right to be healthy
  4. The right to be treated fairly
  5. The right to be heard
  6. The right to be safe


By learning about the Convention our children can find out that:

  1. They have rights
  2. They should be informed about their rights
  3. They should be helped to exercise their rights
  4. They should be able to enforce their rights
  5. There should be a community of interest to advocate young people’s rights

The Gossey Rights Respecting Crew (GRRC) thought a great way to promote childrens’ rights would be to hold a ‘design a poster’ competition.  All children in Years 1-6 designed a poster detailing childrens’ rights and the articles of the UNCRC.  They were ALL fantastic! Class teachers had a very difficult job choosing the winners…

Article of the Month!


This month, the article we are exploring is…

Article 31 (Leisure, play and culture): Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities.


Our School steering group (AKA The Gossey Rights Respecting Crew!) will soon be meeting to decide on a Lunchtime Charter and a Playground Charter, based on this months article.

We will discuss the importance of respecting rights, both inside and outside the classroom.  The children will need to think carefully about the selected rights they feel should be respected in the Dinner Hall and out on the Playground.  Watch out for the photographs of the Charters.


This half term classes across school will be forming their own class charters, which will be on display! The children in each class will decide on the rights they feel should be respected in their classrooms and will sign them in agreement.
