Phonics
Phonics
At Gossey Lane we want all of our children to become fluent, confident and passionate readers which is why we start teaching Phonics early on in Reception.
Phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension Our approach, based around ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics, ensures all pupils access phonics at a level appropriate to their age and ability with the aim that all children have completed the phonics program by the end of year 1.
Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.
They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonics books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.
Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller’s voice.
How Children Learn to Read Through Phonics
Phonics at School
The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 (if necessary) are grouped according to their ability.
Following the Rosenshine Principles of Instruction, phonics is taught daily to ensure children have frequent practice of the sounds and words they have been learning, to increase their fluency of reading and to build on their prior knowledge.
Lessons are fast paced and engaging with all children participating. They practice reading speed sounds, green words, red words and alien words. They then read a text, based around these sounds and words, to apply their knowledge.
Children progress through a range of colour levels. Each level is carefully matched to your child's current phonic ability. This means children are able to read and access texts by themselves and quickly grow in speed and confidence. The progression through book levels is shown below.
