Phonics

At Gossey Lane Academy we recognise that without communication, language and literacy skills, little achievement can be made. We know that we have a duty to ensure that English teaching is a priority and we recognise that the skills learnt in English need to be used and applied across the whole school curriculum to prepare children for the next stage in their education and for life-long learning.

Phonics

At Gossey Lane we want all of our children to become fluent, confident and passionate readers which is why we start teaching Phonics early on in Reception.

Phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension Our approach, based around ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics, ensures all pupils access phonics at a level appropriate to their age and ability with the aim that all children have completed the phonics program by the end of year 1.

Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonics books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller’s voice.

How Children Learn to Read Through Phonics

Phonics at School

The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 (if necessary) are grouped according to their ability.

Following the Rosenshine Principles of Instruction, phonics is taught daily to ensure children have frequent practice of the sounds and words they have been learning, to increase their fluency of reading and to build on their prior knowledge.

Lessons are fast paced and engaging with all children participating. They practice reading speed sounds, green words, red words and alien words. They then read a text, based around these sounds and words, to apply their knowledge.

Children progress through a range of colour levels. Each level is carefully matched to your child's current phonic ability. This means children are able to read and access texts by themselves and quickly grow in speed and confidence. The progression through book levels is shown below.

Phonics at Home

Daily phonics practice and reading improves children’s fluency and questioning develops their comprehension. Each week your child will bring home a class phonics book, that they have been reading at school, as well as a book bag book. You can use these books to practice phonics at home.

Their class book includes key sounds, green words and red words that they work through before reading the book. This helps them to read more fluently.

Their book bag book is matched to the stage of phonics your child is currently working at and gives them the opportunity to apply their phonic knowledge to an unfamiliar text.
