Music
John Lennon's quote on songwriting
‘There are only a few notes. Just variations on a theme.’
Our Intent:
At Gossey, we provide a high quality music education which enables children to develop a love of music whilst increasing self-confidence, creativity and a sense of achievement. Our aim is to inspire pupils to develop a love of music and nurture their talent as musicians. Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
Through our scheme (Charanga Musical School) and topic work, pupils have the opportunity to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. The scheme introduces them to the best of what has been created musically, providing a diverse range of artists and genres for the children to both be inspired by and to learn from. They learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others.
Music begins in the EYFS through Expressive Arts and Design - Being Imaginative and Expressive. Children also engage with different cultural music, which is vital in helping them with their understanding of the world. Pupils will have access to a variety of musical instruments in continuous provision as well as songs and rhymes that underpin teaching in all areas. They have the opportunity to perform in class assemblies to their parents, the whole school in sing a longs such as carols round the tree, and to each other when learning through play. We also use The Poetry Basket to deliver performance poetry throughout the year. The children attend whole school singing assemblies every week once settled in.
In KS1, the children enjoy singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. They have the opportunity to play both tuned and percussion instruments which they use to create, select and combine sounds. They also listen and move to a wide range of music.
Children in KS2 build on the skills acquired in KS1 so that, by the end of year 6, they sing and play with increasing control and self-confidence. They deepen their understanding of music in the world and the significance of music through history. Children are encouraged to explore their own musical preferences and discuss these with confidence.
All children take part in singing lessons in assemblies which contribute to our school, Christmas and Easter celebrations. Our Christmas and end of year performances provides an opportunity for the children to share their work in music with parents, governors and other friends of the school.
At Gossey Lane we believe it is important for children to appreciate a range of styles of music. To achieve this aim, we expose the children to a Composer of the Week.
This covers a range of culturally diverse artists from history to present day.
Gossey Lane is now working in collaboration with the Music service to develop whole school singing and a Choir. As well as supporting literacy and numeracy and increasing brain activity, singing also helps improve children’s skills in less obvious ways, including team-working, creative-thinking, organisational abilities, self-esteem and self-discipline.
