Ready Steady Cook at Gossey Lane !
This term Gossey Lane are involved in Cooking activities across all primary classes, part of the design technology curriculum. There is an exciting array of activities per year group.
Children are learning their cooking skills in a graduated approach building up to actually cooking a meal in year 6. Cooking hygiene is an essential part of the curriculum, as well as healthy foods. Gossey Lane School is making progress along Bronze level of Food for Life- as such we are also interested in food procurement- where our food comes form. We discuss red tractor, farm assured and organic produce and the benefits to eating healthily.
The plan going forward is to involve parents in our on going cooking activities and to have a regular cooking club. Thanks to Lucy our cook for input into lessons and Jayne Hill for inspiration with food preparation. Reception are busy making and tasting pancakes.
Years 1& 2 enjoyed creating their own eat well sandwiches, and fruit and salad kebabs and serving them to each other- café style! Years 3 & 4 got busy with a healthy stir fry and a bake off competition!
This of course involves tasting and testing each other’s baked goods and evaluating them too. I hope the pupils are less harsh than Paul Hollywood. Year 5 & 6 have challenged themselves to prepare and bake Naan bread- this will be tricky without a special oven- but we’ll give it a go. And for the piece de résistance, Year 6 are cooking Lasagne- 3 ways. This means pupils can choose meat, vegetable or Quorn to prepare their dish.
Food surveys feature highly within the topic as well as knowledge about food groups and what foods are for (carbohydrates for energy for example.) This is a great opportunity to develop presentational, exploratory and evaluative talk following a V21 model and using sentences starters for really a high quality.
